Machine Lawn Core Aeration

Without aeration, nutrients from the air, water and fertilizer may not reach the soil, which can cause imperfections in your perfectly manicured lawn. If you’re not convinced yet, check out the seven benefits below to see how lawn aeration can help your lawn keep up with all your fun in the sun.

So, what is core aeration?

Core aeration is a mechanical process, where we use a lawn coring aerator which extracts cores of soil, thatch and grass from the surface of the lawn to increase nutrient availability, water penetration, soil air exchange and reduce compaction. This improves the effectiveness of your treatments and services along with ongoing watering, leading to a healthier lawn.

12 Benefits of Core Aeration

  1. Relieves soil compaction: Compacted soil can prevent air, water and fertilizer from reaching your lawn’s root system, causing dead spots, patches and/or thinning. Soil compaction can also suffocate grass roots, leading to weak, thin grass. By removing cores in the aeration process, soil density is decreased, thus relieving compaction. loosening up the soil and creating space for roots to grow.
  2. Aids in thatch management: Thatch, the layer of dead grass that accumulates on your lawn can build up to a thick layer, robbing your grass of necessary rain and nutrients and provides a breeding ground for insects and other pests, which can be detrimental to your lawn if left untreated. Core aeration helps manage that build-up by introducing thatch-decomposing microorganisms from the soil to the top of the thatch layer.
  3. Increases nutrient availability: Aeration allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate the soil. When nutrients penetrate deeper into the root zone, they become available to the turf. This improves the effectiveness of your fertilisation and ongoing watering to promote a healthy turf.
  4. Benefits pH modification: Applying lime or sulphur after core aeration promotes the change of pH deeper into the soil profile.
  5. Builds a thicker lawn: Aeration stimulates root development and growth.
  6. Reduced water runoff: and puddling. If you find your yard has runoff or puddling problems after a rain, aeration could be the fix you need.
  7. Prepares grass for winter dormancy and a green spring: Before your grass goes dormant, make sure it’s in tip-top shape by pairing aeration with quality fertilization. Aerating prior to fertilizing will help the nutrients soak in more effectively.
  8. Improved Root Development: With more space, grass roots can grow deeper, leading to a better root system that can better retain water and nutrients.
  9. Increased Seed Germination: When you overseed your lawn after aeration, the seed will have more space to grow and better access to nutrients, leading to healthier grass.
  10. Improved Air Exchange: By creating holes in the soil, machine lawn aeration promotes a healthier and more oxygen-rich environment for your lawn and its root system.
  11. Better Overall Lawn Health: Aeration promotes overall lawn health, leading to a more vibrant and beautiful lawn.
  12. Better Drainage: Machine lawn aeration can help improve drainage by reducing compaction of soil and allowing water to more easily penetrate the soil.

Why should I core aerate my lawn?

You should aerate your lawn because it allows the lawn to establish a strong root system before, relieves compaction and allows to nutrients to get exactly where they need to be.

How do I ensure the best results when getting lawn cored?

The best results for lawn aeration are achieved through proper pre-service preparation before our lawn technician arrives and post-service care.

For pre-service preparation, you should:

  • Consider marking underground sprinkler heads with flags or stakes
  • Remove personal property & debris such as leaves from the lawn
  • Mow and water your lawn the afternoon before your lawn technician is scheduled to perform your service

For post-service care, you should:

  • Regularly water your lawn instead of relying on rainfall
  • Mow regularly following the 1/3 rule
