Interested in lawn aeration but not sure how what the differences are between the different types
Pedestrian drum aerators
These are usually found at your local hire yard. In our conditions these tend to be cumbersome and highly inefficient, but cheap as chips
These are operated usually via a belt to a rotating shaft that causes the tines to repetitively slam into the ground. As far as pedestrian units go this is the best variety for day to day works.
The cheap Chinese branded ones tend to leave poor results and really aren’t even comparable to the reputable commercial models from the likes of Billygoat aerators and Groundsman aerators. These are typically capable of up to 70mm and up to 80mm if modified.
For reference we run the Billygoat units in a modified state
Stand on Commercial units
These machines are a different league! Chain Driven with a Hydraulically operated tine set that’s 30in wide these will put down well north of 600kg of pressure on the tines with the operator onboard and deliver holes of up to 130mm or 5inches in depth where conditions allow.
Maintenance on these however is horrendous so the increase in productivity and results does come at a cost.
These machines will cover very large areas and deliver a very high hole density at unmatched depths compared to the pedestrian units.
Aervators
Sounds similar to aerator but works quite differently. You will normally find these attached to a tractor or a Ventrac.
They roll into the soil much like a oversized drum aerator with massive weight on them. However these vibrate violently also and crack/fracture the core holes.
Hugely expensive but far more suitable to severely compacted open areas and paddocks.
As you can see looking at prices alone isn’t the tell of value with these jobs. Its worth a thought before you mention the last business used to do it for $$$, its highly likely that’s all the value they could add!
